Yngwie Malmsteen - War to End All Wars - 2000

War to End All Wars

Showing more aggression than usual on "War To End All Wars" is neo-classical guitar wizard Yngwie J. Malmsteen, as he blazes through eleven instrumental tracks and three amazing instrumentals ("Molto Arpeggiosa", "Preludium" and "Instrumental Institution"). CMJ called the CD, "A platform for Yngwie's awe-inspiring guitar solos... another gem to drool over." Malmteen further refines the neo-classical style here, using frightening speed, a wicked vibrato, and brilliant harmonies to enhance each track - the emphasis is on the guitar once again, where it should be. "War To End All Wars" will take you through the shred battlefield, riddle you with arpeggios, pedal tones and swept licks, then carry you to victory on the back of the brilliant instrumentation.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Alchemy - 1999

Alchemy

Alchemy is Malmsteen's 10th studio album and it is more of what we've come to expect from him. Songs with great guitar playing armed with faster than light solos. However this is not necessarily a good thing because the songwriting is made to showcase Malmsteen's skills rather that the actual songs. When he complements the songs like in "Leonardo", which is the best song on the album, the band sounds awesome. When he dominates the song like in "Voodoo Nights", you are just waiting until the solo kicks in and the song gets old very quickly. This situation makes Alchemy an uneven record.

Track Listing

  1. Blitzkrieg (instrumental)
  2. Leonardo
  3. Playing with Fire
  4. Stand (The)
  5. Wield My Sword
  6. Blue (instrumental)
  7. Legion of the Damned
  8. Deamon Dance

  10. Voodoo Nights
  11. Asylum I: Asylum (instrumental)
  12. Asylum II: Sky Euphoria (instrumental)
  13. Asylum III: Quantum Leap (instrumental)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar And Orchestra - 1998

Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar And Orchestra

With his "Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar And Orchestra", Yngwie J. Malmsteen fulfills a lifelong dream by melding electric guitar and Baroque orchestra (the Czech Philharmonic) - with impressive results. All pieces were composed specifically for this album, scored by David Rosenthal for the orchestra. The concerto was conducted by Yoel Levi of the Atlanta Symphony. Featuring outstanding musicianship and Yngwie's trademark shred, "Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar And Orchestra" represents the pinnacle of Malmsteen's illustrious career - a great addition to all instrumental guitar collections.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Facing the Animal - 1997

Facing the Animal

This is Malmsteen's 9th studio album and there is some good news and bad news that comes with Facing the Animal. The good: this is an Yngwie Malmsteen album. The bad: this is an Yngwie Malmsteen album. There is very little that differentiates this record from the previous ones, so whether you are a fan or not, this album won't change your opinion about him. However when listening to this album there is one significant aspect that I noticed here and that is that the disc for the first time in a while is a band effort rather than a platform for Malmsteen to showboat. Don't get me wrong, there is still plenty of the guitar shredding and wizardry that we've come to expect from him but this time it is a more unified group effort.

Track Listing:
  1. Braveheart
  2. Facing the Animal
  3. Enemy
  4. Sacrifice
  5. Like an Angel – For April
  6. My Resurrection
  7. Another Time
  8. Heathens from the North
  9. Alone in Paradise
  10. End of my Rope
  11. Only the Strong
  12. Poison in your Veins
  13. Air on a Theme (Instrumental)

Malmsteen's cover versions of songs (by Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Kansas, Scorpions, UK, Rush, etc.) that have inspired him throughout his life. The second disc of "Inspiration" contains an exclusive interview and five unreleased tracks - Yngwie Malmsteen in conversation with old friend Leif Edling - the truths, the rumours, the secrets, the super rare songs. The unreleased tracks include "Merlin's Castle", which is an except from the Rising Force demo from 1980, and "Hunted", a Powerhouse demo 1978 (pre-Rising Force).

Yngwie Malmsteen - Magnum Opus - 1995

Magnum Opus

The neo-classical guitar wizard Yngwie J. Malmsteen (He of the Incredible Chops) originally released "Magnum Opus" in 1995. The CD features grandiose classics such as "Vengeance", "Fire In The Sky" and "I'd Die Without You", as well as Instrumentals such as "Overture 1622", "Dawn" and "Cantabile". "Vengeance", in particular, has a jaw-dropping shred solo that will put air guitarists in heaven. Vivaldi's "Cantabile" is a bonus track that was added when the disc was originally released in Japan, then re-released by Spitfire Records in 2000. Neo-classical fand as well as dyed-in-the-wool Malmsteen junkies will find "Magnum Opus" a necessary item for their collection.

Track Listing
  1. Vengeance
  2. No Love Lost
  3. Tomorrow's Gone
  4. The Only One
  5. I'd Die Without You
  6. Overture 1622
  7. Voodoo
  8. Cross The Line
  9. Time Will Tell
  10. Fire In The Sky
  11. Dawn
  12. Tournament (Bonus Track)

Yngwie Malmsteen - The Seventh Sign - 1994

The Seventh Sign

Malmsteen's seventh album is coming off the disappointing and tedious Fire and Ice; the Swedish guitarist had nowhere to go but up. First, let me start with the obvious, the trademark Malmsteen solos are once again alive and well, in this aspect I got exactly what I was expecting. What surprised me here is his bass playing is much more in the forefront and is not just background noise; an example of this is "Pyramids of Cheops".

Track Listing:
  1. Never Die
  2. I Don't Know
  3. Meant to Be
  4. Forever One
  5. Hairtrigger
  6. Brothers (instrumental)
  7. The Seventh Sign
  8. Bad Blood
  9. Prisoner of Your Love
  10. Pyramid of Cheops
  11. Crash and Burn
  12. Sorrow (instrumental)
  13. Angel in Heat (bonus track)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Fire and Ice - 1992

Fire and Ice

After the disappointment that was Eclipse, Malmsteen comes back with Fire and Ice and, sadly, the same formula is used here. The excess on this record is big; as this is the first album that surpasses the hour mark and the first in which he opens with an instrumental. You just feel that the songs are a platform for Malmsteen to prove that he is a great guitarist. Unlike his 80's output, the songs on Fire and Ice have a hard rock style with very little catchiness.

Track Listing:
  1. Perpetual
  2. Dragonfly
  3. Ceaser
  4. How Many Miles to Babylon
  5. Cry No More
  6. No Mercy
  7. C'est la Vie
  8. Leviathan
  9. Fire and Ice
  10. Forever is a Long Time
  11. I'm my own Enemy
  12. All I want is Everything
  13. Golden Dawn
  14. Final Curtain
  15. Broken Glass (bonus track)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Eclipse - 1990

Eclipse

Eclipse is Malmsteen's fifth album and after the great work that was Odyssey, this album departs from the others stylistically. What separates this from his previous works is the mid pace in which the record is played, even though the solos are fast (as expected from Malmsteen). Also the songwriting is sub-par aside from two or three songs; they are either dull or repetitive or have forced choruses. The lack of consistency on this release is staggering. There is a lot of stuff here that you've heard before and not necessarily in Heavy Metal, like the riff on "Bedroom Eyes". Also the beginning of "Judas" sounds like "Queen in Love". "Save our Love" is a horrible ballad that has its moments but I've heard much better ones from Malmsteen.

Track Listing:
  1. Making Love
  2. Bedroom Eyes
  3. Save Our Love
  4. Motherless Child
  5. Devil in Disguise
  6. Judas
  7. What do you Watnt
  8. Judas
  9. Faultline
  10. See You in Hell (Don't Be Late)
  11. Eclipse

Yngwie Malmsteen - Odyssey - 1988

Odyssey

After the success that was his solo career, Yngwie Malmsteen went through a lot of changes. Beginning from his mostly instrumental album Rising Force until this day, he has employed different styles, always appealing to a larger audience. This is where the fourth album by Malmsteen, Odyssey, comes in. The first with John Lynn Turner, continuing his streak of amazing singers; yes, this guy rules just as much as he did on Rainbow. Odyssey has more of the same things that we expect from Malmsteen: shredding solos, awesome vocals, insane hooks and good production. However one thing that stands out above all is the solid songwriting.

track Listing
  1. Rising Force
  2. Hold On
  3. Heaven Tonight
  4. Dreaming (Tell Me)
  5. Bite the Bullet (instrumental)
  6. Riot in the Dungeons
  7. Deja Vu
  8. Crystal Ball
  9. Now is the Time
  10. Faster than the Speed of Light
  11. Krakatau (instrumental)
  12. Memories (instrumental)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Trilogy - 1986

Trilogy

With a cover that is perfectly evocative of its music, Yngwie Malmsteen's TRILOGY boasts an illustration of the Swedish metal guitar hero battling a three-headed dragon. Not surprisingly, the album is filled with high drama and fantastical themes, whether Malmsteen is presenting a passionate power ballad (the opening "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget") or charging through a revved-up, solo-laden tune ("Magic Mirror"). Many of these tracks (including the aforementioned ones) feature vocalist Mark Boals, who belts out lyrics in classic hard-rock style, yet leaves room for Malmsteen's deft and ornate six-string pyrotechnics. Although it doesn't top RISING FORCE, TRILOGY is easily one of Yngwie's best outings.

Track Listing

  1. You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget
  2. Liar
  3. Queen in Love
  4. Crying (Instrumental)
  5. Fury
  6. Fire
  7. Magic Mirror
  8. Dark Ages
  9. Trilogy Suite Op:5 (Instrumental)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Marching Out - 1985

Marching Out

Malmsteen's playing on the follow-up to the epochal Rising Force is slightly more raw and aggressive, but the most notable difference is the addition of lyrics on many of the songs. By his own admission, Malmsteen isn't much of a lyricist, and his frequent use of occult and pagan imagery (demons, Vikings, and so on) isn't as effective at producing a dark, gothic mood as his compositions and guitar playing are. Still, those aspects of the album are vital and stimulating, making Marching Out a worthwhile listen.

Track Listing
  1. Prelude (instrumental)
  2. I'll See the Light, Tonight
  3. Don't Let It End
  4. Disciples of Hell
  5. I Am a Viking
  6. Overture 1383 (instrumental)
  7. Anguish and Fear
  8. On the Run Again
  9. Soldier without Faith
  10. Caught in the Middle
  11. Marching Out (instrumental)

Yngwie J. Malmsteen - Rising Force -1984

Rising Force

"Rising Force" was the neo-classical metal epic from a young Yngwie Malmsteen (sorry, Yngwie J. Malmsteen) that shook the guitar world and raised the standard of technical excellence forever. Almost overnight, guitarists learned it was possible to play a guitar nearly as fast as a classical violinist plays a violin, and players such as Tony MacAlpine, Joey Tafolla, Vinnie Moore and Joe Stump followed in Malmsteen's footsteps to release neo-classical dirges of their own. "Rising Force" is definately worth owning for the six instrumental classics alone--"Black Star", "Far Beyond The Sun" and "Evil Eye", to name but a few.

Track Listing
  1. "Black Star" (4:53).
  2. "Far Beyond The Sun" (5:52).
  3. "Now Your Ships Are Burned" (4:11).
  4. "Evil Eye" (5:14).
  5. "Icarus' Dream Suite Op.4" (8:33).
  6. "As Above, So Below" (4:39).
  7. "Little Savage" (5:22).
  8. "Farewell" (0:49).
