Sirenia - The Enigma Of Life - 2011

The Enigma Of Life

Morten Veland doesn't require any introduction, anyone interested in gothic metal has a special place in his heart concerning this Norwegian musician whose love for gothic rock and metal at the same time inspired him to walk upon his own path in the scene. The years have passed though and inspiration doesn't last forever, even if your role on early Tristania was crucial and you hold aces in the pack just like At Sixes And Sevens and An Elixir For Existence.

Sirenia - The 13th Floor - 2009

The 13th Floor

“The 13th Floor” comes after 3 albums and one EP, at a very important point in SIRENIA’s road, because their previous release “Nine Destinies And a Downfall” was admittedly a very good and also successful album, so the expectations are higher this time. Many compare SIRENIA to bands such as Nightwish, Within Temptation, Evanescence, but the similarities are very general and SIRENIA manage to have their own identity.

Sirenia - Nine Destinies And A Downfall - 2007

Nine Destinies And A Downfall

When it comes to gothic metal, Morten Veland is a man that knows what he's doing and how to achieve it simply because he knows what gothic rock is, what metal is and how to blend both genres together in the most appropriate way and present gothic metal which is actually... gothic metal and not a creation of some label, magazine, audience etc! After a few years since we last heard something new from them and a line-up change in the female vocals Sirenia returned pretty strong with their new album, "Nine Destinies And A Downfall" which is a remarkable piece of gothic metal. Emotional, intense, esoteric and melodic are some of its characteristics, a bittersweet album to hallucinate you in creative melancholy.

Sirenia - An Elixir For Existence - 2004

An Elixir For Existence

Woah! Looks like the bar has been raised for intensity levels in Gothic Metal! Although Sirenia were not disappointing at all on their last effort, their sound had some pop influences in it and was not very heavy at all. On "An Elixir for Existence" however, Sirenia seem to have recognized that problem and put forward a real hard knocker that is as genre-transcending as anything could possibly get. This is still Gothic Metal; however, if I were to be extremely picky about it, I'd label this Progressive Gothic Metal with a strong Melodic Death influence marked by monster heavy metal riffery! Tristania meets Dark Tranquillity with Children of Bodom and Norther jumping in every now and then….so yeah…this may not be everyone's thing!

01. Lithium And A Lover

Sirenia - At Sixes And Sevens - 2002

At Sixes And Sevens
Well this is a silly little album isn’t it? Former Tristania member Morten Veland resurfaces, along with a new goth metal band claiming to hoist the glory of the masterpiece Beyond the Veil. However, At Sixes and Sevens rather manages to create a watered down knockoff that could never compare to the album which I would go as far as to call the definition of what a fantastic record of this genre should sound like. It’s like they really weren’t trying on this one, just relying on the name and the spiteful message against Tristania’s recent and controversially experimentally album World of Glass. Said album is still excellent in my mind and trounces this blatant and exhausting knockoff. The sheer ability is there, but this was not a 100% effort.
